The Cheese Place, now located at the northern end of The Dayton Market since May 2020, offers a wide range of high-quality, bulk food products at fair prices. Our selection includes beans, rice, pasta, flour, nuts, dried fruits, loose leaf teas, and an assortment of imported and domestic cheeses. We're known for our Homemade Pimento Cheese, Cheese Balls, and a nostalgic array of old-fashioned candies.

Our Story
Eva Heatwole grew up on a farm near Dayton with four older brothers, where her fascination with retail began at Clover Hill Store. As a child, she created a makeshift grocery store in her family farmhouse bay windows, stocking shelves with cleaned-out cereal boxes and canned goods. This early passion for business stayed with her.

In 1987, after seeing an ad, she and her husband joined another couple to open a bulk foods store in what is now The Dayton Market. They operated there for five years before starting The Cheese Place in Harrisonburg, returning to The Dayton Market after five successful years away.

The store has been a family affair, with her daughter Megan becoming my partner and her mother also playing a significant role until her recent retirement at age 90 due to Covid-19. At The Cheese Place, we take pride in providing a warm, inviting atmosphere where customers feel at home, finding not only great products but also a sense of community and old-fashioned hospitality.
